08:53 pm - boring bike stuff / hub motor dreams
A new level of tied.... I took the long way to work (yes Sunday afternoon). First I head out to Waldon pond, then go north/east on 62 until it hooks up with 3A. This takes me to mystic lake / Arlington and then onto Cambridge. Its only 41 miles - but I guess I rode hard.
The ride was mostly uninteresting until I hit a crack (parallel to my travel) and ripped up the side of my tires and causing both ties to be without air in ~10 secs. I was going downhill (ie 20+++) and some car pulled out from a gas station forcing me to move to the right into the crack. With both tires flat I was loosing control- but machine to get the speed down fast enough that when I did lose control I just fell over into some bushes...
Last night I took a longer way home. Usually its ~7 miles - but I managed to turn it into about 15. I spend a lot of time dreaming about a bike hub motor. My dream is to make it fast and easy for me to commute long distances on a bicycle (and thus license free). The hub motor could add an additional 200 watts for long time periods - for a total of upto 450 watts. So if I'm lazy (not peddling) I'd go about 20 mph @ 200 watts, and something in the low 30s when working hard and getting an extra 200 from the motor. Its the idea of going 30+ for hrs that has my interest....
I could easily carry 400 watt hrs of LiPoly batteries (5lbs). Usually it takes appx an hr to re-charge to ~90% (phase 1, 4.20V/cell), and additional two hrs to complete phase2/3 (100%). However, it *could* be possible to fast charge at several times "capacity" if the goal isn't 100% charge. After the pack nears depletion (~2 hrs), one stops into a gas station to get water / food, and charges the pack to 50% in 5 mins at 6x. An additional 5 mins might bring the pack to 75%. I'll have to run some experiments!
